Troop 98’s

Scoutmaster and his NEW Toy - 2011

By Jack W.

Event: Troop 109 Cabin Weekend @ Hidden Valley (1/28 - 1/30/2011)

Attended: Troop 109 and Mr Webb by invitation!

Location: Hidden Valley Scout Camp, Gilmanton Scout Reservation, Gilmanton Iron Works, NH

I was asked to participate in a cabin FUN weekend with Troop 109 of Londonderry this weekend. I know I had a blast and the scouts of Troop 109 seemed to have FUN as well.

This is the first opportunity I have had to play with my NEW toy - the ICE-BOX igloo making tool from Grand Shelters (www.grandshelters.com). After reviewing the site and all of the customer reviews - I had to see how it would work up here in the New England snow - vs the Rockies. All I can say is WOW!!! While the troop was off snow tubing and sledding, I built first two tiers solo (oh my aching back...). When they returned, we had lunch and ASM Brandon C. and one other scout assisted with the rest of the shelter building.

The next 3 tiers went much faster and easier, though dinner time came around much to quickly. The last 2 tiers (7 & 8 - the top or dome) did not get completed - lack of light and energy. However, Brandon and I covered the top with a tarp and slept in it anyway!!!

Even though I reviewed the DVD 3 times and read the instruction twice, I still had some tier-tier transitional issue - I need to make a laminated card with the instructions for next time. All issues and time aside, I was completely amazed and surprised at how solid and sturdy the shelter was after only a couple of hours to sit and set-up. The key to success was not overpacking the snow - the weight of each proceeding layer kept it solid and sturdy. I will have to remember to keep a shovel inside with me - as there was some debate as to whether or not to leave me in there with no way out...

What a great weekend - if available, I would gladly go camping with Troop 109 again!

2 hours into shelter building

Break time - my back is throbbing...

This is pretty easy to use.

Ok - one more block and we'll break for supper.

Thank you Brandon for cutting me a door to get out.

Who says you can't have an igloo with a view???

Good morning Lake Eileen!

Yes that is a frozen Lake Eileen out our front door.

Thanks Troop 109 for a great time!
