By Colin D.

Event: Woodsmanship Camporee

Attended: Luc, Colin, DJ, Billy, David, Will, Andy, Matt, Jake

Location: Raymond Park (Pelham Scout Lot), Pelham, NH

The Woodsmanship Camporee was an event that spanned three days, Friday through Sunday, October 3rd to the 5th. It was a camporee for both boys scouts and cub scouts. It consisted of stations that we would go to and get scored based on criteria relevant to how the site works. For example, the “Fireblade” site was scored by strikes that lit matches divided by strikes that didn’t.

On Friday we set up camp, and then we went into our tents since everyone had eaten beforehand and it was very cold.

Saturday morning we had French toast for breakfast. After breakfast we went to stations. Sometimes we had problems figuring out where to go, but other times it was easy. One of the stations we did well with was Fireblade. Matt got the first match lit after about 60 attempts. At this point we thought we knew how to do it, so we decided to continue. But we ended up getting one out of 200 attempts. Around 11am we sat down for lunch. Well after lunch started stations again. At one of the stations we each had to climb to the top of a tree. About three of us finished that station – Will had the 2nd best time on that station for the whole weekend. Dinner was chicken and dumplings (yum). After dinner we participated in the Saturday campfire. Jake was the emcee of the fire. There were some skits and random improv, and we had a great time.

The next morning there were some problems with making breakfast, but we managed to fill our stomachs and then left around 11am. The one award we received was the Squirrelly Award (for spirit).

At our first station we practiced typing knots strong enough to carry a big log in a circle.
